artdey: Charcoal is a central medium in your work, adding a grungy yet emotive feel to your portraits. What draws you to this medium, and how does it help you express your visual language?

Olamilekan Akinsola: Charcoal's raw, expressive quality resonates deeply with me. Its tactile nature allows for intuitive mark-making, capturing the essence of my subjects. The grungy, imperfect texture conveys vulnerability and emotional depth, echoing the complexities of human experience.

artdey: Your style seamlessly blends multiple mediums, from graphite and charcoal to acrylics and oil paint. How do you decide which medium to use for a particular piece, and what role does this mixed-media approach play in your storytelling?

Olamilekan AkinsolaChoosing mediums for my artwork depends on the narrative, emotional tone, and texture I aim to convey. Each medium offers unique expressive qualities, allowing me to tailor my approach to the story.

artdey: Many of your works capture people in moments of daily life—working, resting, or simply being. What inspired you to focus on these everyday scenes, and what do you hope to convey through them?

Olamilekan AkinsolaCapturing everyday moments fascinates me, as they reveal the beauty in mundane routines. I'm drawn to the quiet dignity, vulnerability, and resilience embedded in daily life.

artdeyWhat advice would you give to emerging artists trying to find their unique style and voice in today’s art world?

Olamilekan AkinsolaWhat I’ve learned so far is that consistency doesn’t necessarily mean you have to work every day or stay up at night. Consistency is showing up and making sure that no matter what happens, you’re still connected and most especially growing.
