Artist Spotlight: Getting Real With Wilson Dixon

Wilson Dixon is a Lagos-based contemporary artist who creates abstract masterpieces that are profound and hold cultural meaning and history. His work blends elements of traditional and contemporary styles. We sat down with him to chat about his artistic journey and creative process. We’re incredibly excited to explore more about him, as he’s one of our longstanding artists who has been selling with us for years. We selected some amazing pieces from his collection to feature in our holiday collection, which are available to shop on our site. Let’s get to know more about him!

We Are Dots in the Grand Scheme of Life, 2022

artdey: Can you share your journey as an artist and what inspired you to pursue abstract art specifically?

Wilson Dixon: Over the years, my art has evolved. Back in 2002 at the National Gallery of Art, Iganmu, Lagos, I was sharing a studio space with seven other artists as part of a residency program. At that time, I painted 80% landscapes and figure paintings, and 20% abstract paintings. I continued this until early 2022 when I returned to reviewing my line drawings in my sketchbook, which inspired me, along with the market demand for abstract art.

artdey: What is your creative process like when developing a new piece, and how do you decide on the themes or emotions you want to convey?

Wilson Dixon: My creative process can change when I am about to develop a piece; it depends on the materials available at hand. Sometimes I use fabrics (ankara) as my ground or spread sawdust on the canvas to enhance the texture, or I paint impasto. After sticking the fabric onto the canvas, I then apply my acrylic paint to create my concept. Most of the time, the title comes after the painting is completed, or if I decide to work on a series of themes, these may reflect my experiences.

Jagged Edges, 2023

artdey: Over the years of working with our company, how have you seen your style evolve, and what have been some pivotal moments in your artistic career?

Wilson Dixon: Over the years, as a studio-practicing artist, I have created collections of works, and the artdey team comes around to select pieces from my collections for marketing. My style has evolved in response to the demand for abstract concepts and the influence from clients. A pivotal moment for me was when a client requested six abstract paintings framed to be delivered in 24 hours. It was a marathon moment for me; I couldn't believe it, but hey! It was done.

artdey: What message or feeling do you hope viewers take away from your abstract pieces, especially those featured in the holiday collection?

Wilson Dixon: You know, abstract paintings are intriguing, soothing, and provocative. When one comes across an abstract painting, it can arouse curiosity, either disturbingly or provocatively. It can provide physical relief (therapy), perhaps freeing you from fear or anxiety. From the collections featured in the holiday collection, viewers should see the world as a united place where we meet to part, either in love or hate. We are not bigger than one another; we are just ordinary people.

artdey: Who or what are your biggest influences in the art world, and how do they inspire your work?

Wilson Dixon: In my early days of art practice, I had a few artists from whom I was influenced. However, I came to realize that they didn’t want your survival in the field, so I stopped allowing their influence.

artdey: What’s your advice for other artists?

Wilson Dixon: Looking back at the past and fast-forwarding to today, my advice for fellow artists is: "Don't give up your skill." Keep painting, no matter the circumstances you find yourself in.
