Joy without a permit

My toddler niece inspired this portrait, there is a thing about her that makes me question if I can truly have a heart like hers. She never asks if it is acceptable to laugh, dance, or cry, nor dream—she just simply does her thing.

This feels like a scrutiny for me as a person, because I get to question why we are laughing when nothing is funny in the present day, and I still told myself—crying is just a sign of weakness.

I truly wish there were another chance to be unapologetic free like a child, free from restraint, overthinking, and too much self-consciousness, a time when everyone will experience joy without validation or permission.
